Done During The SAIC Early College Program
For our assignment we were told to "destroy" something. I think my teacher had in plan for us to literally demolish something on camera for 10 minutes, a more installation art type video.
I on the other hand wanted to experiment with a more narrative piece.
My original idea was from looking up how to ruin, destroy, a relationship, what NOT to do on a first date, and so forth on the internet. I was planning on it being a voice message of someone apologizing on the phone about something they did but just making the situation worse.
After some brain storming I decided that my "ruined date" idea was to cliche and I think after spreading my grandfathers ashes this summer... I was inspired to write this quirky story.
Doing this video was the best experience, with the help of my teachers I learned how to field record EVERY sound. In fact all footage had to be silent and the sound added separately, because the dorm rooms had these terrible fans that turned on with the lights. I would have to rerecord the action with the lights off the catch the sound.
I am very proud of this piece. I had never worked a video camera before (always used the video setting on my digital camera on the other videos) and my actress had to teach me how to put a tape in! I was able to record multiple sounds on a field recorder (something that was new to me) and arrange them into my final project, including my own voice for "voice message."
