A.D.I Concept is back with its 2015 main season show, titled, #BPBM – An Adaptation of Bawang Puteh Bawang Merah. The show will run from 29 October to 31 October 2015. It will be staged at the Drama Centre, Blackbox.
The journey embarked by 3 friends both on-screen and off-screen, continues, as they take on another Malay folktale injected with hysteria and pandemonium. Directed by Adi Jamaludin, 33 and written by Faizal Masjudi, 28, #BPBM is as Malay take on Cinderella. This story will take you through the trials and tribulations that Bawang Puteh (played by Nur Khairiyah, 28) experiences with her stepmother and stepsister after the death of her parents.
Inspired by a 1959 film, this folktale was curated to be part of A.D.I Concept’s five year work plan of staging pantomimes based on old Malay folktales and stories. Now into its second year, as part of growth, the group of 3 now becomes 4 with the addition of new cast, Siti Zuraida, 33, who plays Labu and Bawang Merah. Siti is a seasoned actor and was recently seen acting in Theatrework’s Three Inches of Alive and Teater Ekamatra’s 5.
Adi and Faizal who double up as actors for this production, went into thorough research on the various version of Bawang Puteh Bawang Merah; stories that has been told and retold. A collaborative effort was carried out by all the four actors to brainstorm ideas and concepts that will make the archaic tale more relevant to today’s society. The big challenge with modernizing this tale was contemplating on how to strike a balance between presenting what is relevant today as well as maintaining the essence of the story so as not digress much from the original storyline.
Adi, Faizal, Khairiyah and Siti, the team has successfully contemporarised the story to take it to another level. The culmination of all four brains put together gave birth to #BPBM, an out-of-this-world story comprising of devised works and improvisations seamlessly weaved together.
#BPBM will also be featuring three schools, Teck Whye Primary School, Rivervale Primary School and Endeavour Primary School. The schools will be performing a ten minute sketch which will be integrated into the play. The students are brought in as part of A.D.I Concept’s experiential programme, for them to experience what happens behind and on stage.
#BPBM presents the classic theme of good triumphs over evil as well as the message of hope, courage and standing up for what is right. The quartet is hopeful that audience of all ages will be able to enjoy #BPBM.
