Hello again from Wildpics. Today we are excited to share with you a few minutes in the life of an extraordinary little bird the “Cinclus cinclus aquaticus”, also commonly known as the Dipper and for this individual you see is a Southern European Dipper to be exact.
Now this is no ordinary little brown bird. The Dipper is in the order of birds known as Passerinforms, or Song birds to most of us. However the dipper has developed some very unique adaptations and amazing behaviours.
You see the Dipper is a semi aquatic song bird! Yes that’s what we said.
Dippers live in and around cold and cool water streams and rivers. Feeding on insects in and out of the water; yes in the water. The Dipper dives underwater foraging for aquatic invertebrates on and between the rocks. Bobbing underwater for brief moments and with almost flying like movement it propellers itself underwater; as they franticly search for food. A truly intriguing bird to watch as the move up and down the river banks. Dippers are found throughout Europe and even into North Africa and the Middle East. Normally found in mountainous and higher altitude areas with well flowing streams.
Our first encounter with this little bird left us with a lifetime fascination and we hope you will enjoy a moment in the life of the Dipper as much as we did.
