Our Executive Director read a news story about a growing number of street children in Rumbek, the capital of Lakes State. He traveled there and met these children. Deprived of the security of home and family, they depended on themselves, foraging, stealing and fighting to stay alive in the midst of a great displacement and the erosion of the modes of economic and social production that would once have supported them.
Urban centres are a refuge for many children like these, fleeing conflict, the death of their parents or the destitution in which their families are mired. Still, for all the money these boys earn now, it is a tragedy that they cannot live the lives of children, surrounded by the love and care of responsible adults. It is a great injustice that they cannot get an education and with it the chance to aspire to better lives.
