This map shows all observations from iNaturalist.org since 2008. Locations are the coordinates where the observations were made, but the dates are the dates they were uploaded to iNaturalist, so the temporal component shows growth in site usage more than observation behavior.
The video was made using CartoDB's amazing Torque (cartodb.com/torque). There is a temporary dynamic version at inaturalist.github.io/animated-map.html, in case you want to zoom in on parts of the world other than North America and California.
