Hum Aisay Kyun Hain is Shoaib Mansoor’s contribution to the work of Pakistan Nari Tehreek and its Anti-Rape Campaign: ‘INKAAR – Zabarjinsi Se’. Shoaib Mansoor is a renowned film-maker who makes films on social issues of Pakistan. This documentary shows popular views of people about rape and how women end up being blamed. These views are countered by male and female experts, i.e. Dr. Khalid Masood, Dr. Saad Malik, Dr. Kamran Ahmed, Marvi Sirmed, Dr. Aslam Khaki, Prof. Mehdi Hassan, Justice Javed Iqbal and Dr. Fouzia Saeed and among the media celebrities, Hamid Mir, Asma Shirazi, Meher Abbasi, Fareeha Idrees, Faisal Qureshi, Shahzaib Khanzada, Iftikhar Ahmed and Fahad Hussain.
This documentary unfolds common myths about rape and how the whole society is conditioned to protect the rapist and blame the victim. The documentary introduces a new term for rape, ‘Zabarjinsi’ and encourages people to use this term instead of traditional verbatim like ‘Izat Lut Jana’ and ‘Ismat Dari’ which puts down women and reinforces the idea that it is women who lose their honor by being raped. The documentary encourages people to hold the rapist accountable, shift the focus on him and if there is to be stigma attached, it should not be with the person who is raped but with the rapist (Zabarjinsia).
