The video takes inspiration from Charles Bukowski’s poem ‘Roll the Dice’ that speaks of human endurance and the sacrifices that cast a gloom over our goals. This message is set in the context of Johannesburg, a challenging African cosmopolitan city, where individuals 'migrate' from all places to take a chance on life.
This video is a collaborative work between r1. and film director Harold Holsher. It is based on r1.’s public art piece ‘Hidden Trophy’ (2015) located in New Doornfontein, central Johannesburg city. The art piece is a 5x5 meter circle installed on a street wall. The pattern hides the shape of a blue wildebeest’s head, a distinctive African antelope known for its spectacular annual migration. All these elements combine in this piece by means of subtle metaphoric representations, channeled through the 'vision' of the artist as he journeys into the city night.
The video is entirely self-funded. It would not have been possible without the generous contribution of the following people.
