As we were walking towards the village temple in Central Bhutan to witness a Buddhist festival and rituals, we were greeted by three Atsaras. These are monks in disguised as clowns. They came towards us with a phallus candle and a wooden phallus. Then we were blessed with the two objects.
The believe is that the phallus wards off evils and brings good luck. If you feel embarrassed by it, well that is also a blessing. The embarrassment helps to cleanse any unwanted or evil thoughts that comes into mind.
The person who introduced such a gesture is Drukpa Kunley. He is also known as the Divine Madman, a legendary Buddhist monk of the 15th century, who teaches Buddhism in an unorthodox way by dramatising the teachings using outrageous sexual humour.
