FlexN was one of the lead projects in the Manchester International Festival; a biannual cultural and arts event hosting world-class performances from all over the globe. Their show was a transatlantic collaboration between 10 dancers from NYC and 10 dancers from Manchester. The show was based on the lives of the dancers, performed entirely using the freestyle dance style, FlexN.
Our challenge is always to get to the why before the how with any project we take on, and none more so than with this. The story behind why these dancers are who they are is truly remarkable. Breaking through personal, social, political and racial barriers to become a better person is what drives every single dancer we met throughout filming. Tension and release is a theme that dominates. There are many different pressures that effect each person and it's how you choose to release that energy that makes you the person you are. So many of the people we filmed have been one decision away from a less positive future and that's the inspiration behind the short documentary we made.
This film has had such an impact on the whole team, that we are currently making a feature-length documentary about the entire culture. You can read more about it here infiniteflexn.com
