An Australian veterinarian talks about the "spirit-breaking" ceremony known as Phajaan, which has been used to domesticate elephants in Thailand for hundreds of years, while an elephant who is too weak to lie down circles behind her on a long chain. The elephant later died, due to a host of related problems including amphetamine withdrawal, infection and malnutrition, despite the best efforts to save her.
