Project: NCIS: LA “It’s Time”
Director: Jon Yeo
Producer: Elizabeth Dolan
We were approached to create the soundscape for the latest NCIS teaser trailer; a dark, moody and introspective affair that provided plenty of opportunity for sonic storytelling. We embark on a journey of mental and physical preparation as Agent Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) readies for his next operation.
How We Did It:
Making of Film here: vimeo.com/12677390
Memories in sound form often yield a immense opportunity to create a sub narrative that will create an emotive layer within the context of the film. LL Cool J has sonic flashbacks, micro tonal triggers that pull him back to a successful arrest, a Navy Seals bootcamp or an intense close up to a personal object.. This is sound from the edge and its highly personal.
The film is set against a cold and industrial backdrop, and we wanted to reflect this in the ambience and treatment of the sound painted design. Contact microphone recordings of pipes and boilers were introduced to achieve that sub-level warehouse tonal feel of a deep-rumbling building that is awake and fully active in supporting the personal within.
The contrast within visual to sound is set against the buzz and flare of fluorescent lights.
The sound design switches from ambient to claustrophobic with the use of exaggerated or abstained reverb, in an attempt to illustrate the transitional between the lucid internal dialogue and sonic flashback..
Music was subtle and composed as an extension of the sound design rather than a track in it’s own right. A trait of Radium ... putting sound design as a narrative. Ambient vocals and sweeping pads were employed to enhance the cinematic atmosphere and connotations of something special about to happen.
Sounds we created: Radium styling, VO treatment, radio chatter, objects, neon, close miked ticks, human knuckle, musical texturing, gun foley, warped sonic intimacy, LL Cool J foley,
