welkin: Middle English, 12th century; refers to the vault of the sky, the upper air, the firmament, or the celestial sphere, i.e. the Empyrean. In archaic cosmology, it was thought to be a set of crystal spheres that enclosed the Earth, to which the planets and stars were attached, so it would have been capable of ringing like a bell if one made enough noise.
