klub katarakt, the festival for experimental music runs from January 13th – 16th, 2016 for the eleventh time at Kampnagel in Hamburg. The US-american composer Christian Wolff (b. 1934), companion of John Cage, is this year’s composer in residence. From the younger generation the festival invited Sascha Lino Lemke, a Hamburg-based composer working in the field of interactive music. Famous for her interpretations of the New York School, celebrated pianist Sabine Liebner will present works by Christian Wolff and John Cage and will contrast this selection with other milestones from the 20th century. This year’s Night Concerts feature The International Nothing with their strange and suspenseful clarinet sounds and the electro-acoustic Duo Diatribes from Geneva. Special guest of the last night is Rainer Kohlberger, audiovisual artist from Berlin. He takes part in the Long Night of the katarakt network – the presentation of Hamburg’s experimental music scene.
In its history klub katarakt brought several greats of international experimental art to Hamburg. Artists like Eliane Radigue, Phill Niblock, Alvin Lucier, Rhys Chatham, Charles Curtis, La Monte Young & Marian Zazeela, Marc Sabat, Gerard Pape, Matthias Kaul, Lois V Vierk, Marko Ciciliani and ensemble zeitkratzer were featured as composer / ensemble-in-residence. In addition the festival presented in the past years new works by audiovisual artists like Josephin Böttger, Makino Takashi and Telcosystems.
klub katarakt, organized by Jan Feddersen, Robert Engelbrecht and Ernst Bechert, offers again a multimedia platform for newest experimental music and audiovisual art. “Not only the listenening experiences but also the presentations at our festival are unconventional – we are all three musicians and composers ourselves and therefore love to create new forms of music reception for our audience as well as new forms of music-making for our guest artists”, as the festival directors put it.
