Looped film made for gallery exhibition on the link between barbarity, colonialism and the museum.
The film was shot in the Maputo Natural History Museum, Mozambique. This is the world's only complete collection of elephant fetuses. In the early 20th century the colonial government in Mozambique decided to clear a large area of land south of Maputo for commercial agricultural projects. A 'clean up' of two thousand elephants was necessary and led by Portuguese hunt supervisor, Mr Carreira. It was his idea to preserve the fetuses in formaldehyde for museum display. The ground never produced any commercial crops.
