The Dokka is the first folding knife crafted by the experts at Helle in Norway, where they’ve been making renowned knifes since before their workshop had electricity. And they sure got it right on their first try--this blade delivers more functionality than any other folding knife I’ve ever used; it’s just a bonus that it is gorgeous!
Of course, any great knife starts with a great blade. At just under 3.5” with a slight drop point and wide belly, the design provides a shape that both holds up to hard point-work and also slices well. For example, on one weekend this knife was used to teach Survival School (carving fire boards, scraping magnesium) in the afternoon and after nothing more than a wipe down, cleanly handled all the fine dicing and chopping involved in preparing a gourmet backcountry feast for 8 people that evening.
The shape is great, but not unique. What is unique to Helle blades is the actual blade composition; a core of hard, durable high-alloy steel which is double laminated with corrosion resistant (and shiny!) stainless steel. The result is a blade that combines the benefits of high alloy (durable, holds an edge exceptionally well,) while still providing the corrosion protection of softer stainless steel.
The beautiful curly birch handle is another area where form follows function. Although wide, due to the reinforcing steel liners, the lightweight wood means the handle is balanced perfectly to the blade shape. This provides an ergonomic grip, resulting in confident control of the blade and comfort in the hand; two things I value highly in a knife when I’ll be using it for hours on end!
I’m also a big fan of the locking mechanism. Often, I’m not secure bearing down fully while using a folding knife, not trusting my fingers to the mechanism. However, the Dokka’s mechanism is reinforced with steel liners and the release located on the lower half of the handle, minimizing chance of accidental release. It also means this is not a “one handed opener;” slightly less convenient, but 100% legal, even in NYC.
The Helle Dokka is quite simply the best all purpose folding knife I’ve ever used and good looking, too. With care, it’s a knife I expect to rely on in the backcountry for years to come.
