One of our projects at Dalmore, our new 12 acre smallholding, is to create a soft fruit garden. The old walled garden is about 9mx12m and ideal - walled on three sides, not shaded, and with excellent soil.
This year we'll clear the ground, build a wall on the north side, hang some gates and give it a deep covering of horse manure. It'll then be covered in black plastic and stay like that over-winter, to be sown with potatoes in the spring, then planted with raspberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants, gooseberries etc in autumn 2011.
It's good to plan ahead!
