Rallentando is an installation that creates a virtual Forest, enabling hyper-living humans to experience a vital restoration of body and memory.
Created by Gwenyth Dobie from Out of the Box Productions, Rallentando is based on the Japanese idea of Shinrin-Yoku, or forest bathing. It is an environment that creates calming effects through changes in the nervous system—in the same way as exposure to nature has been proven to do.
Inside the Rallentando installation, the audience experiences a gradual slackening of tempo, leaving behind the distractions of contemporary urban life.
SlowPitchSound DJ Chel Paterson creates a sonic trail, for a deeply poetic experience. Using his turntable as an instrument, sounds are captured and looped.
Digital media artist William Mackwood maps video projections onto the playing space in order to create vivid, fully immersive, forest-like worlds, with properties that nourish and rejuvenate participants.
Movement artists use the Kinect Camera to contribute interactive events to the Forest Bathing experience.
Selected participants wear pulse monitors in order to form a collective resting heartbeat, creating a deeply shared experience.
Time warps, it decelerates; clouds, greens blues; sunlight, wind, water, waves. Breath.
Rallentando acts as a counterpoint to our contemporary rhythm and pace. It reaffirms the importance of contemplation in nature to aid in stress recovery and attention restoration. Milan Kundera wrote: “The degree of speed (at which we live) is directly proportional to the intensity of forgetting.” The faster we live, the less we actually experience.
Rallentando can be mapped specifically for any environment. Art Galleries, Museums, Music festivals, Large Theatre Halls or Urban Centres. It is accessible for persons of all ages, cultures, and languages, including those with visual or hearing impairment. The piece loops continuously in 30-minute cycles. The public can rest as long as they want. Day Dream. Remember.
The quieter you become the more you are able to experience.
Rallentando offers a dose of nature, when nature may be hard to find.
