It always seems a little surreal to see a large ship sailing through the narrow Manukau Harbour and the mostly residential neighbourhood, on its shores. During the 15 or so years that I have been riding over the harbour, I have often seen it coming and going and sitting . When I saw this from my bicycle the other day, I pedalled faster than I usually do so that I could catch up with it closely and film its progress. I started on the southern shore of the harbour and finished up on the old bridge to watch it dock at the port.
We will not be able to see this sight for much longer. The Holcim cement ships will no longer come to this harbour. The Onehunga port is going to be redeveloped. So it's an end of an era of sorts.
