virtual environment walkthrough, 2015
Ongoing project exploring the concept of mapping memory.
I am interested in spaces, both digital and physical, as sites to activate and re-construct memory. Both the digital and the physical space present me with different platforms and tools through which I can sort through the memory archive and draw upon different sensory experiences in order to materialize an exploration, or a re-activation of the “ghosts” or forgotten memories embedded in the space in a nonlinear and abstract way. The way the viewer or user experiences or engages with these spaces will inform their own narrative re-membering experience.
To create this virtual environment, I searched through my archives and found every image and video taken by my father in the kitchen in the house I used to live in as a child. I have vague memories of events that happened in this space and I can loosely construct the room in my mind. I am using a 3D modeling program to take all of these documents and “map” them in an abstract sense onto a representation of the room created from memory, that becomes fully navigable for the engaged user.
