Forty thousand dollars will send someone to college for a year, but in Howard County, it’s the approximate amount they spend to keep an inmate behind bars. The Fall 2015 ViewFinder team of photojournalists went to Howard County for an in-depth look at inmates hoping for a fresh start and the people who help them make the most of their second chance.
According to the Howard County Department of Corrections, around half of those released from their jail will end up back on the inside. Staying out isn’t easy, but these stories give us a glimpse at the work being done to try to stop this cycle.
