What's out of this world? Satellites.
And what keeps those satellites out of this world? Propulsion systems.
This animation we did is a promotional piece for Phase Four but also an educational review on the current status of satellite technology. Large satellites can be as heavy as an SUV and cost tens of millions of dollars to launch to space. So small satellites the size of a coffee mug have become increasingly popular. They also offer the bonus of being able to blanket the Earth when used in multiples, thus increasing their coverage. However, their propulsion systems are low performance, dangerous and expensive. And without propulsion, they can't reach optimal orbit and thereby generate maximum revenue.
This is where Phase Four comes in. They have created a plasma propulsion thruster that negates these issues.
Needless to say, this was a really cool project to work on. We were able to use an existing slide presentation that Phase Four had that acted as the initial "script" for the story we wanted to tell. Working closely with Phase Four, Kohlitz created a storyboard and concept art inspired by the slide presentation. Phase Four had a strong, consistent design style already implemented in their branding and we were able to create an animation that fit nicely with that style but still maintained a "sketchy" style that Phase Four favored.
