Justin Finch visits the cryogenics lab at the San Diego Zoo and speaks with scientists about their quest to preserve the DNA of endangered species.
The best way to see a zoo is as a producer/reporter. (Actually, I think this is the best way to see anything.) As such, you get a behind-the-scenes look that most people don't get a chance to see. Our tour of the Animal Park was delightful - especially my up close experience with a Northern White Rhino, endangered and dangerous - I had to back off when it looked ready to charge our camera! We also had a heart stopping moment when our geneticist couldn't get the DNA samples closed and stored because his hands were so cold - any slight change in temperature can kill off all those samples - literally hundreds of endangered species!
Very special thanks to the San Diego Zoo Conservation Research Center.
