DUB Levithan! By Tore Vagn Lid
Transiteatret works at the intersection between music and theatre with the development of a critical experimental theatre.
Our main ambition has been:
To find new ways of expanding the potential of the theater room as a critical room of experience, where especially the musical - and the music dramaturgical - potential of the theater becomes important.
With our latest creation
We have over a few seasons been testing out and experimenting with the developement of what we have called a ”Scenic DUB” or ”Stage DUB”.
We will try to give you a short introduction to the concept:
DUB as a music genre and work form grew out of the political tumults - far away from Norway; In Jamaica in the late 60s and early seventies. The “formula” consisted of:
- Replacing the Lead singer (or vocal) with the mixing console.
-Giving the principal parts to the bass and percussion – and then:
-Waving the magic wand to make the foreground the background and vice versa.
It could be said about “DUB music” that the extremely deep and sensual bass is aimed well below the belt - at the libido. While the equally shrill treble notes - aim for the top of the head - at the logical thought. The contrasst is inviting and challanging – not only in terms of sound: When bass and treble are distilled in their extremities, an open space – a void - is created in between.
As music genre - DUB is thus in principle - democratic and welcomming, not only in terms of style and material, but also in the decision in which voices and elements could fill the void. Streched out in time, in a stripped-down and repetitive musical pattern, it also requires the active involvement and co-creation of the listener.
So – the question is, we asked ourselves: Is it possible to conceive DUB as something more than a specifig musical sub-genre associated with Jamaica and the 1970s? Would it be possible to conceive “DUB” as an even more open invitation – an invitation to the organizing of the theatre room - as such? With DUB Leviathan! we have been attempting exactly that strategy:
Namely to transfer the concepts and work forms of the DUB-genre over to the theatre-room. In other words to “open up” the DUB-mix for the all the available tools of modern theatre, and in this way try to create an extended metabolism of space, video, animations, sound and movement etc. The hope has been ultimately to highten the experience for the listener, to power up the theatre room – to create an engaging environment for a reflexive and critical content.
DUB LEVIATHAN! – is conceived and produced as a “Scenic album”.
Just as three old vinyl records could be accommodated in one single box with a single title, the “stage album” DUB Leviathan! consists of three single performances, each with its own tracks and performers; and could be played in any chosen order. Each of the DUB-versions displaces the centre of gravity between different theatrical and musical parameters.Spanning from interaction between cinema and live music, staged consert, visual radio-plays to interactive ”pub-quiz shows”, singalong sessions. – Just to mention a few.
In 2016 the Transit team is working on an remix called U-DUB with planned premiere in end of april. Stay tuned!
