“The World is Spinning (and so are we)” was the fourth collection to emerge from a project focused on generating short small group works woven from differently-composed blends of set and improvised dancing. But while the three previous collections manifested as groupings of distinct dances, this one unfolded as a 52-minute continuum filled with many pieces, some lasting only seconds and others several minutes in length. The audience was seated in the center of a gallery space while the action progressed in, through, and above a circular area around them, alluding to how we sometimes encounter people, events, and phenomena in our daily lives.
You’ll see an approximately 3 minute long excerpt, during which at least several events occur. [The three separate segments grouped here are sequenced to reflect the order they appeared in over the course of each evening, and carry the flavor of the wonderful old SoHo space within which we had the pleasure to perform.]
Choreography by David Appel, with the other dancers (Ellen Smith Ahern, Jenni Hong, Hannah Seidel, and Darla Stanley)
From the first performance, May 9, 2014, at the Emily Harvey Foundation, New York, NY
