With so few women taking technical roles within the film industry, Firefly Arts and Light Shed Pictures got together and set up the Female Gaze Project. Our goal is to encourage more young women to take part in filmmaking and to challenge gender stereotypes within the industry.
With our first project, The Old Lie, we assembled a film crew of six teenage girls and a contemporary dance group of fifteen teenage boys under the guidance of choreographer Natali McCleary. After four pre-production sessions, the two groups met for the first time on set and spent three days filming come rain or shine, followed by two days of editing workshops.
Shot on location in some of Glasgow's wildest places, The Old Lie is an experimental dance film which explores themes of war and innocence, taking inspiration from Wilfred Owen's classic poem, Dulce et Decorum Est and Tom Waits' Hell Broke Luce.
