I shot this stuff today on my HV30. I used a 35mm lens reversed on the end of the camera to get these shots. The lens is a minolta 50mm 1.4.
I would have liked to get more of the flowers but every time I got the tripod setup at the correct focal length from the subject the wind would pick up and the shot would be no good.
The white that you see in the ant stuff is sugar. I used this to attract the ants. It also gives you a really good idea of how small the ants were and how well the reverse lens technique works.
As you can see it is quite hard to keep the subject in focus. To focus you need to move the camera back and forth. If the subject moves a couple of milimeters it is out of focus which is why it was so hard to keep track of the ants. The more you zoom in the worse the depth of field gets too.
