In early 2012, twenty year-old Melbourne student Ben McMahon, was involved in a serious car accident. He broke his arm, his ribs and sustained a serious head injury that left him in a coma for more than a week. His family by his bedside were left waiting not knowing when or if he would wake up. After days of waiting, Ben’s parents received a phone call in the middle of the night to say Ben had woken up, but that he was only speaking Mandarin having forgotten how to speak English. It was a moment that baffled his doctors and family and one that would be spoken about in the medical world for years to come...
Ben’s new found fluency catapulted him into a new life. He started studying Mandarin full time, began Chinese walking tours and even starred in his own TV show. Now living in Shanghai and studying commerce alongside some of China’s brightest, Ben has seen the silver lining in what could have been a lasting tragedy.
