In 2014, the "Positive Parenting as told through Cultural Community Voices" project was initiated to build bridges between cultural communities, the Immigrant Centre and the General Child and Family Services Authority (Winnipeg). The vision is to strengthen families, enhance community connections, establish relationships and increase trust. The project aims to empower new Canadian communities and to both identify and celebrate the wealth of parenting knowledge and experience they have through the production of a variety of multi-media products and materials.
The 2016 showcase provided an empowering opportunity for new Canadian families to express this wealth of parenting knowledge and experience. Teamed with professional Winnipeg artists, the families presented their stories of positive parenting through video, theatre, spoken word and graphic illustration.
The showcase was an opportunity for new Canadian families to honour the parenting practices of their countries of origin and relate how their skills can be balanced with a new Canadian parenting context. The evening was a celebration of differences and similarities through a creative and artistic lens. The hope is to build bridges and break down fears because all citizens, no matter their birthplace, love children and want them to be safe and well cared for.
