A neighborhood in Northeast Portland used community building in an effort to engage neighbors and reduce crime. A prominent approach to crime reduction in the public realm is known as Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED).
CPTED is an approach that creates spaces where it feels uncomfortable to commit a crime. This includes actions like neighborhood watch, block patrol, improved lighting, and clear sight lines. In addition, activating public spaces with people who can watch out for each other is a common practice for CPTED.
This movie focuses on one effort of the neighbors that resulted in two large street paintings that they created together.
