It’s a rough time to enter the publishing game. At least that’s what everyone told me when I took the job of Editor over here at Snowboard Magazine. People think print is dead, and the mag is going out of business were two of the most commonly heard things when I talked about taking this job. I don’t really believe either of those things. We are a small company owned by one person. That person sits down the hall from me, not in some far away office building. I would hope that I would be able to see it coming if we were to be going out of business. For now we are fine. We all love what we do here in the office and want to show people snowboarding in a nice light.
As far as the idea that print is dead, I don’t buy it. I come for a photography background and love to see my own and other photographers photos in print. I love the web, but to see what your photos look like in the magazine is really nice. Besides, our magazine is nicer to look at than a screen, and I wouldn’t want to have an Ipad on my lap when I’m on the toilet. I love snowboarding and I like magazines, so I guess I found the perfect job for myself.
