Bats of the Republic is an illuminated novel by Zachary Thomas Dodson. This excerpt is read by Will Oldham (AKA Bonnie 'Prince' Billy), and was originally featured on the Real Pants Pantscast with an accompanying interview: realpants.com/podcast/pantscast-episode-3-zach-dodson/
Bats of the Republic is an adventure, featuring hand-drawn maps and natural history illustrations, subversive pamphlets and science-fictional diagrams, and even a nineteenth-century novel-within-a-novel. The book is set in the 1840s when Texas was an independent Republic for a few strange years. Zadock Thomas is a naturalist who travels to Texas and becomes obsessed with documenting all the bat species there (like an Audubon for bats, really). He makes camp outside of a cave and creates many drawings of bats, featured in the book. This bat footage is courtesy of Millie Kerr. It was shot at Bracken Cave in Texas, home to the largest bat colony in the world. The title animation is by Maja Tisel.
