Kristina Inčiūraitė, “Following Piece” (“Sekimas”), 2011, experimental film, 9 min
With the help of a telephoto lens, the artist followed three men getting off a trolleybus and going home in the Lazdynai district of Vilnius (a well-known example of Soviet planning in Lithuania). The stories of their surveillance are presented alongside images of the forest in the same district. Viewers can see the occasional appearance of women walking their dogs in the forest: Inčiūraitė thereby raises the question, who is being followed by whom?
To increase the emotional intensity, the artist uses contemporary music with a rich vocal range. Inčiūraitė uses a mystical and intimidating woman’s voice to reinforce the position of woman in these urban public areas, and also to show that a woman is capable of possessing a mechanism for voyeuristic gaze, surveillance and power.
