The mountains in winter require a different set of skills and equipment. They can be tremendously beautiful but the conditions found during the winter months can test even the most experienced mountaineers. Visibility can quickly reduce to nothing, snow and ice can hide paths and make normal ascent routes suitable only for those equipped with an ice axe and crampons. There are also the added risks of avalanche and cornice collapse to contend with - all possibilities on days where it appears as though it is summer in the car park.
The Snowdonia National Park’s team of wardens climb Snowdon every day of the winter months to record the winter ground conditions. This film follows its wardens, shows the conditions found in winter and the equipment necessary to enjoy the mountains safely.
The film explains how to access the Wardens reports and points out some of the black-spots in winter on the busiest mountain in the world - Snowdon.
