“Talking With Your Doctor” needs strengthening. Making the most of your doctor visits can make a dramatic difference in your life. Yet, unfortunately too many older adults are intimidated by the busy professional doctor; come ill-prepared for the visit; or become overwhelmed by all the information offered by the doctor. This needs to change.
Graceful Aging brought Dr. Jack Voytas, the head of the Geriatric Fellowship Program for William Beaumont Hospital, in for a consultation. “Dr. Voytas described a number of effective tips for older adults like writing questions down; prioritizing the points; taking notes; recording the conversation; bringing along someone to the visit; and more,” says Graceful Aging host Gregory Bator. “It is very interesting to hear about a typical visit from the doctor’s perspective. Dr. Jack provided some good pointers on when and how to press doctors for more explanation.”
This important topic comes to viewers in two parts. We know older adults will benefit. Part Two will continue with even more effective techniques to make the moments with your doctor more valuable. Don’t settle for ‘take two aspirin and I’ll see you in the morning’; instead, make doctor visits count for more in your life.
