The Students of the ISS Senior School were asked to participate in the Samui Mala project as part of their PSHE lessons. We were given the theme to work with and it was decided to create a water harvest system, as a possible solution to the water need of the island.
The students helped in designing the system, researching the issues of water management and also in the product development. This allowed a cross-curricular approach which included aspect of science, art and design, geography and ICT.
Some of the students were also involved in making a video presentation to highlight the problems associated with water and sanitation, both locally and globally. These students got first hand experience with video production. Other students were involved in producing leaflets and posters to advertise the project utilising their ICT skills.
Overall I feel all the students gained massively from the project and when the students finally saw their work been displayed to the public, felt a great sense of achievement and self-satisfaction, whilst also becoming more aware of ecological issues.
