Jigsaw Cooperative Learning - I learned this teaching technique from Dr. Ash Casey at the National PE Institute in Asheville, NC and loved the idea. I shared the idea with my school's music teacher, Vasti Atkins, and we decided to give it a try. We put our 5th grade classes together, about 55 students, and decided to have them come up with a dance. First, we separated them into letter groups. Then, we assigned each student a number, 1-8. Each student then moved to their number groups and decided on 4 steps for the dance. Then, we regrouped the students into their letter groups to teach their group each step. After practicing the dance together, we lined them up by letter group and performed their dance. It was great to see their cooperation and enthusiasm throughout the process.
