All technology is imbued with values -- deliberately-engineered qualities that mirror certain aspects of human behavior. And the Internet is no exception.
In this talk, Richard Whitt will discuss the code, people, and processes of the value-laden Internet, with an eye towards describing the recent shift in empowerment from the “core” of the network to users operating at its “deep edges." As part of this discussion, Rick will outline the challenge facing the tech industry as it struggles to explain itself to government policymakers, in Washington and elsewhere. How can we protect the key values of the Internet -- including its open, interconnected, end-to-end design -- when would-be regulators fail to appreciate or even understand them?
