This film is a registration of the debate 'Cradle to Cradle', which was held on September 9th, 2010. This debate is organised as part of Atelier Van Lieshout’s thematic exhibition Infernopolis in the Submarine Wharf.
In Cradle to Cradle, the German chemist Michael Braungart combines the apparently incompatible: our culture of unbridled consumption and a beautiful earth. In Cradle to Cradle people consume according to the laws of nature: all waste is nourishment for new life. The more waste, the better. This is a revolutionary idea that leas to a better world in which we can happily continue our rampant consumerism. But is this true?
The Rotterdam-based artist Joep van Lieshout (1963) has taken this principle to the extreme in his recent installation Cradle to Cradle (2009). His installation recycles everything, even people.
Karim Benammar focuses on the ideas of the French philosopher Georges Bataille in order to expose the roots of Braungart’s theory: the economy is not a battle for scarce resources, but simply a culture of waste…
Joep van Lieshout, Michael Braungart and Karim Benammar will debate about this concept Cradle to Cradle. Moderator of the debate is Hans Kennepohl.
