Moribundo, was written for percussion ensemble SlagwerkDenHaag. Niels Melifste featured in this video. The commission for composing Moribundo was to use aspects of mexican cosmogony towards death, which include a defying and humorous approach to it. I use wooden boards that work as analogy to coffins. These are rubbed with special designed mallets using half a 'SuperBall' based on percussionist Diego Espinosa's own mallet findings. The sounding outcome is an homology to the voices or 'chants' of the dead. Rugged PVC tubes, often used for electricity cabling, are used as an allegory to the airy breath of spirits. The project involved a collaboration with film animation artist Martha Colburn, whose film decontextualizes mexican inspired imagery, merging it into a dutch background. The original film is in colour.
