Turning data into a spatial experience - a physical 3D installation showcasing HERE location intelligence in action.
Spatial branding agency GRAFT Brandlab developed a projection mapping project for HERE, the next generation location intelligence provider. HERE provides unparallelled levels of location-based information, comprising of a broad range of specialized maps, information provided by static and mobile sensors, historical data and backed-up by powerful cloud-based computing capabilities.
The installation, a 3D model of San Francisco, showcases HERE’s expertise in providing location intelligence by harnessing the power of Big Data. We were asked to create and realize a concept for the visual content and the overall sound design.
The video mapping content that we created for the installation was designed to explain the various aspects of HERE’s services and was itself divided into several chapters.
We illustrated how lidar technology forms the basis of the HERE map. The scanned data flows into a ‘Real World Index’ that features highly detailed maps and overlays, including visualizations of public transport networks, and points of interest. Real time data flows into the equation, and for example, provides heat maps for different activities at different times of the day, or showing the current traffic situation in the streets.
We also created content that illustrated individual cases. One of these showed a driver attempting to reach a destination. On the way to the location, a road traffic accident occurs ahead of him. The sensors in the accident vehicles transmit the incident back to the HERE network. As a result, the driver is re-routed to avoid the scene.
Additionally, the traffic lights are switched to green for the emergency vehicles attending the accident. Thus, the driver reaches his destination in the fastest possible time, the traffic is re-routed to avoid jams and the accident is dealt with in the most efficient way.
The Augmented City Model is among the winners of the Creative Technology Award 2015.
