Mata Haggis is Professor of Creative & Entertainment Games at NHTV University in The Netherlands. He is a game & narrative designer with experience of both AAA and indie development spread over 15 years, as well as writing fiction for other media (TV, web, prose). Alongside fulltime professor-ing, he is collaborating with Dutch developers SassyBot Studio to make the PINE (Playable Interactive Narrative Experience) game called ‘Fragments Of Him’.
Storytelling is often criticised as the weak point of many games. Mata’s session introduces the basic elements of how to create strong plots that are driven by your characters. It starts with character motivations, and moves on to a plot outline that can be re-used across multiple genres to help you make sure your players are taken on a memorable and meaningful journey. People new to writing (for games or other media) are welcome, and experienced developers are likely to pick up tips on how to strengthen their work.
