After three decades of war, in the early 1990s Mozambique was one of the most heavily land mined countries on earth. Landmines continue to pose a serious threat to people today. Thousands of victims have never received medical attention nor the chance to emotionally heal.
“Voices from a Shattered Land” tells the stories of four land mine survivors. Celso is a 10 year old boy who stepped on a landmine while playing in a Maputo suburb. Augusto is a 72 year old man who has been left to fend for himself in a remote rural area. Rosa and Helena are single mothers, providing for their families while dealing with the stigma posed by their disability.
This documentary was funded by the One World Trust. It was used for advocacy by Handicap International and the Mines Advisory Group and presented in partnership with Handicap International at the U.N in Geneva in 2011 and 2013.
