A 20 minute video I directed and produced in 1993 for GRUMPY - The Greater Manchester Play Resource Unit. It was, and still is, a Charity I was a supporter and Trustee of, and who wanted to make a promotional video about their work and activities in the field of play.
Shot and edited over a 6 month period with Jim Hallworth on S-VHS camera and me on sound it was hard work but great fun to make.
I've dug it out of the archive to revisit and upload. Back then I called in quite a few favours - Steve Trappe at ITV to do the on-line edit and Beverley Ashworth (a well known face on Granada TV screens at the time) to record the commentary which was skillfully mixed at John Wood's Studio in Sale. Madness's 'House of Fun' plus backing tracks by Durutti Column adorn an atmospheric soundtrack.
Watching it again after all these years it harks back to a time when play was viewed more as a collective endeavour for children's and young peoples' social development via community action and engagement.
