The Sunroom, a program created by O, Miami Poetry Festival, pays poets to teach workshops in communities where high-quality creative writing instruction is not guaranteed. Currently, the program provides instruction to 40-50 students in the 3rd and 4th grade at Poinciana Park and Orchard Villa elementary schools in Liberty City. In addition, the program places poets in four different area detention centers in partnership with Exchange-for-Change. The leader of the Sunroom program is educator Laurel Nakanishi. All Sunroom programs take place in South Florida, with the vast majority in Miami-Dade County. For more on the program or to donate, visit omiami.org/sunroom-poetry/.
