EDIT - 06/26/11 : This was my entry for the SCAD Film Challenge in October 2010, and although it did not win anything at that competition, "Being" has since then been recognized for:
YoungArts 2011 Silver Award in Cinematic Arts
Scholastic Art and Writing 2011 National Gold Medal
as part of the official selection for NFFTY 2011
for my recognition as a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts, for which "Being" was exhibited at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and other animations of mine were incorporated into a performance at the John F. Kennedy Center
Thanks to everyone for the support you've given me since...forever! You're the coolest.
"Being" has original music by my friend, Sydney Everatt, who makes brownies as good as her songs. You can and should check out her awesomeness here: youtube.com/user/l2ose12
As for the short, this is a recreation of my original, first-ever animation "Eraser Critters." It's about the idea that we are compilations of the influences around us, the struggle we go through to figure out what to be as human beings. This short traces the whimsical journey of an eraser that gains life and character from the drawings it absorbs, although, in the end, determining what to be proves complicated for the eraser when drawings enclose it from all sides and introduce sinister parts of its world.
It's a combination between clay animation and drawn animation--tricky to orchestrate, but it led to some interesting interactions and ideas.
I hope you enjoy. :)
