Spirit Bear Hunting for Salmon, Gribbell Island, Great Bear Rainforest, British Columbia, September 16, 2010. The Spirit Bear, aka Kermode Bear, is actually a black bear with a recessive gene that gives it a white coat. Approximately one in ten black bears in the area are Spirit Bears. The Spirit Bear is protected under law from hunting in BC, the only place where it is found; however, black bears, which produce the Spirit Bear, can be hunted.
The Spirit Bear is said to be rather docile and somewaht less aggressive than its black bear cousin, which typically shuns it and shoos it away from shared hunting grounds.
