As everyone's been tightening their belts to get through the recession, the Brookwood Florida home for adolescent girls who are victims of violence and/or neglect has had to cut costs by turning away young women who are in need of help.
Over the past two years, raising money has been difficult and their efforts fell short of their goals. Recently, the nonprofit therapeutic group home held a fundraiser - the Swanky Soiree - to raise much-needed funds to keep operations running. The event was co-chaired by Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Gabe Kapler and his wife, Lisa.
While the organization awaits an official tally, the event raised around $35,000 - a seemingly high figure. However, Brookwood Florida spends about $140 per day, per girl. Most of their costs are fixed such as transportation, insurance, and house upkeep; so cost cutting comes in the form of less food and services, in addition to the decrease of the number of girls they can take in.
