Animation based on Nikolaos Chatzikyriakos Gkikas oil painting named "Popular Games" (1937). N.Chatzikyriakos Gkikas is one of the most emblematic figures of modern painting in the Greek area. As a consequence of the general delay in different sectors of production the modernism in arts appears in Greece just in the '30s. In that age artists are searching for the relation with the old glorious history and tradition, they search about the "Greek" element in their works.
In 1936 Greece is under the fascist type dictatorship of I. Metaxas, who is also speaking about the glorious past and the importance of preserving the Greek traditions. Under this point of view, the arts where used quite often from the political power.
The dictator also organized youth fascist groups. The children 's figures appearing in the animation come from document pictures of those groups.
The animation was made in order to be presented in the group show called "Visit" in Katakouzenos House, Athens in September 2010. The owners of the house -now a non-profit foundation- where close friends with Gkikas and many other figures of the modernist period. Works presented at the exhibition meant to re-visit the Greek modernism.
The animation was shown on a digital frame on the wall between the old objects of the house.
