WHERE THERE'S SMOKE, THERE IS FIRE'
Maarten Baas is one of the most prominent artist-designers in the Netherlands today. In 2002, Maarten Baas made his debut with the Smoke series that concluded his studies at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. For this series, Maarten Baas set fire to a variety of chairs, tables and other furniture and extinguished the fire just in time for the charred furniture to be treated, making them functional again. This series was well-received and resulted in a lot of attention from museums and art critics, partly because of the fact that Maarten Baas didn’t burn just any old furniture, but also selected design classics. Furniture such as Rietveld’s Zig-Zag and Red & Blue chairs, as well as the Van Toor family’s old grandfather clock, went up in flames before starting a new life.
A short film was made about the transformation process of a classic grandfather clock from the Van Toor collection. We hope you enjoy watching it!
