Artist-filmakers Johnny Mercer and Paul Samuel White created this National Lottery Heritage funded documentary film in collaboration with the young members of Vulcan Amateur Boxing Club (VABC), chronicling the heritage of their club and the historic Hull Fish Trades Boxing Gym (known locally as ‘Fish Trades’), founded in 1946, in which VABC is now based.
The characters themselves narrate a series of interflowing tales and themes including: the breakdown of Hull’s fishing industry, Romany Traveller traditions, British boxing, poverty, drug use and escape. The keynote of the film is 'overcoming' - individual and collective.
The film incorporates archive photographs and cine film as well as hand processed Super-8mm.
Musical credit end sequence: Charlene and the Soul Serenaders.
